With inspiration from a friend I attempted a bigger ZIA.
Mooka is one of my favourite tangles and I enjoy using
mooka as a string so I let my pencil dance across this beautiful piece of watercolour paper. The paper sat on my desk for a week and every spare minute I sat and tangled until it felt finished. It was hard to stop but I didn't want to loose the string.
Do you think I should fill in more or leave the white spaces?
Size: 55cm x 79cm (21 1/2" x 31")
I think it has the right amount of color. It doesn't detract from the gorgeous patterns. So lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! You're such an inspiration to me! I love the white spaces because they give your eye a path on which to navigate the piece. That being said, I think you could get away with a little bit more filling in if you wanted to :)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all: this is fabulous! It must be a great feeling doing this piece. I think it is finished as it is, but my suggestion is, listen carefully to that inner creative voice. If there is something still a bit 'off' it will tell you that. For me, I get that sense of 'rest' when I feel/know it's done. Xo maureen
ReplyDeleteI am always so amazed at your work. It is fabulous the way it is! You walked away from it thinking you were done, so its done for now. If, when you see it again and feel you have the right thing to add, you have space for it.
ReplyDeleteI have several large sheets of Natural Lokta paper waiting for me to put ink on them. You are and inspiration!
It is beautiful. I like the white spaces as it draws your eye around the piece. Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI have the hardest time leaving "white space" on my drawings, I think it is because I work in graphic design, and the customers I design advertisements for want to put a size 12 foot in a size 2 shoe, if you know what I mean? I love the white space you have left in your drawing, It gives great eye flow... I would leave it alone. :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous :)

....................very nice. Did you say the next one would be 6 feet square???? The sky's the limit..........m
ReplyDeletei love the idea of using mooka as the string!!!
ReplyDeleteShelley, I love your work and this one is no exception. I'm glad to know that you also struggle with knowing when something is done. For me, it is fear. I get something I like, but don't LOVE and wonder if I add more, will it make it better or will it ruin it.
ReplyDeleteBut, to answer your question. I think the white space is fabulous. I definitely would not tangle in it. But, I think it if you darkened the shading around the white, it would really make the whole thing pop. There needs to be more dark as a contrast to the white.
Or, you could just leave it alone as it is gorgeous.
This is so beautiful. I love how you were able to keep it light and airy and have it be so big. The colors are lovely too. Thanks for all your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWow, I like that very much! Stunning!Nice idea to use Mooka as a string! I will try this out once! Thanks for sharing! have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is just fabulous! I love the idea of using Mooka as the string. I think the amount of white space really keeps it light and airy. (I have a tendency to fill in all the white space, which I am really working to curb!) The spare use of color is just perfect. Overall, truly lovely.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all your great comments and thoughts. Do try a large ZIA, it's fun to just leave on the table and add bits here and there just like those monster jigsaw puzzles!!!
ReplyDeleteYour ZIAs are always gorgeous and this is spectacular. I don't think it needs anything else, but if you would go and add something, it would fit in and not look overdone whatsoever. As you were inspired by a friend, now you've inspired many of us to try a large ZIA. Thanks for posting and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteLovely ZIA. Mooka does make for a great string, and the negative space (inside) is very revealing. But I also like the delicate touches of tangles/colors inside a few of the Mooka strings. (Photocopy/print ZIA with white Mooks strings, then you'll have 2 prints to work with: one with and one without tangles inside Mooka). Would make for a great 'study in contrast'.
ReplyDeleteSome bloggers have decided to let other bloggers know how much they are appreciated by giving out awards. I have awarded you on my blog at:

Thank you for your blog. It is inspirational to me.
I would leave the large white 'mooka' areas white and fill more of the background with your blues and greens. It's lovely!
ReplyDeleteI see 'byrd' has already given you the award. I was about too, but will pay-it-forward to someone else! :-)

This Zia is great! I love the mooka's with so much great background work! I like the open areas. This would make a great poster for a tangle sampler! Thanks for sharing your work with us!!
